Siemens VDO reduces pollutant emissions with modern electronics

Construction vehicles are also subject to requirements that the environmental friendliness of engines be improved further. Siemens VDO is using its many years of experience as a supplier of engine management systems, sensors, and injection systems to also make the various construction vehicles of the future lower in emissions and more environmentally friendly.
Small sensors have a big effect: The NOx sensor from Siemens VDO measures nitrogen oxide concentrations and the air/fuel ratio in exhaust gas and transmits this information to the engine management system. If the values measured exceed permissible limits, this can be recorded in the onboard diagnostics and finally counteracted, for instance by triggering the regeneration of a NOx storage catalyst.
The particulate emissions from diesel engines in commercial vehicles have already been greatly reduced by improving combustion and sensors. Substantial further reduction in particulate emissions is possible through the use of additional exhaust purification systems developed and produced by Emitec, a joint venture between Siemens VDO and the British company GKN. With the Emitec particulate matter filters, the overall particulate emissions can be reduced by up to 60 percent without any maintenance.
In its developments, Siemens VDO attaches great importance to preventing the generation of pollutants in the engine. New combustion processes aimed at accomplishing this are in the research and development stage. In the future, more and more electronics will thus find their way into the engine compartments of commercial vehicles as well, where they will improve performance and lower emissions.
