Equip Auto 2007: Siemens VDO Presents Universal Vehicle Diagnosis System

Siemens VDO is expanding its aftermarket range through the addition of the SIDIS MB diagnosis system. The system can examine more than 15,000 control units from well-known automotive manufacturers in more than 800 vehicle types to detect errors.
Without electronics, vehicles would be nowhere near as safe, fuel-efficient, and environmentally friendly as they are today. Regular service and maintenance ensure that they also remain this way. The electronics in the vehicle do, however, pose severe challenges to the staff and equipment at workshops and customer service centers. State-of-the-art diagnosis systems are an indispensable aid to day-to-day work in this field.
Drawing upon many years of experience with hardware and software diagnosis solutions for automotive manufacturers, Siemens VDO is presenting its new SIDIS MB, an easy-to-handle vehicle diagnosis system for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. The system is able to identify errors in the engine management system or in the peripherals, such as the engine sensors or the comfort, ABS, and transmission control systems, which, thanks to precise directions, can be eliminated quickly. SIDIS MB covers more than 800 vehicle types from 43 well-known automotive manufacturers, from Alfa Romeo to Volvo.
The exchange of data between the vehicle interface and the PC takes place via a Bluetooth interface as a standard feature. SIDIS MB is connected to the vehicle via the onboard diagnosis cable, which comes with the system, or one of the optional adapter cables that are available separately.
The languages supported by the DSI Plus diagnosis software, which has been optimized for SIDIS MB, are English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. The software includes detailed wiring diagrams, PIN allocations, data sheets, target values, service plans, and a customer and vehicle management module. Data can also be recorded during a test drive and accessed later. This facilitates error diagnosis to a considerable degree. Ongoing updates ensure that the software stays up-to-date at all times.
Siemens VDO plans to further expand the diagnosis system in the near future. Starting in November 2007, the range of products available will also include the SIDIS MB PAD, a tablet PC specially developed for tough workshop conditions. Once again, communication with the vehicle interface takes place via the built-in Bluetooth interface. A docking station with a second power pack, second battery, and a DVD drive will also be optionally available for the SIDIS MB PAD.
Siemens VDO will offer the new vehicle diagnosis system to its customers as a supplement to its broad spectrum of original replacement parts for the open parts market. The existing range includes fuel systems, engine setting elements, sensors, windshield wiper systems, actuators for the central locking system, and blower and fan elements to cool the engine and supply the vehicle interior with fresh air.
